This weekend, news broke that the head of Burkina Faso's military junta, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has signed a new charter in the form of a constitution that extends the mandate of the transitional military government by five years. The decision will take effect on July 2, 2024.
Burkina Faso joins the list of West African countries where the military has seized power, accusing elected governments of failing to fulfil their promises. This situation has been ongoing since 2022.
What is known so far is that the junta severed military ties with the French government and sought security assistance from Russia.
